What no Safety Services Ltd are one of Wiltshire’s leading Health and Safety Consultancies. They offer a comprehensive range of Health and Safety services to help clients comply with the law, and support companies by showing how to implement best practice and improve performance whilst ensuring business operation is not compromised.

Purpol Marketing were approached by What no Safety Services to aid the business growth objectives and encourage development into new areas.

The process was kicked off with a thorough audit to determine the current activity undertaken by the business, the goals, aspirations and current status. This resulted in a comprehensive market understanding model, SWOT analysis, evaluation of the competitive environment and potential next steps for the business to instigate.

The highly detailed report and recommendations gave Alastair Barrett – Managing Director, a great deal of insight and through a collaborative development procedure including Skype meetings, a number of the recommendations were actioned, these included:

Website Restructure – Purpol Marketing instigated a restructuring of the information contained within the website to optimise usage for visitors. This was done within the existing website layout and templates whilst developing new methodologies to incorporate additional features.

Social Media activity integration – Although What no Safety had a social media presence it had not been developed or utilised in a sustained manner. Purpol Marketing developed a schedule of activity to increase exposure to the market place. Efforts were focused on two channels. Firstly, on LinkedIn a new company profile was developed to highlight the credentials and skill, this then was followed up by a targeted contact strategy to develop both Alastair’s connections and company followers. This exercise encompassed targeting professional group membership and participation via an active content communication strategy. The second phase included the development and implementation of a maximised Twitter profile designed to establish an increase in followers. These processes resulted in What no Safety being exposed to in excess of 2,500 additional industry contacts.

Case Studies – Finally, Purpol Marketing undertook the process of developing a suite of case studies to showcase the extensive experience and the unique approach of What no Safety. This included branding template development and evolving the content structure to promote the benefits of the service. Purpol undertook client telephone interviews to gain specific insight and then crafted the case study content, using appropriate imagery to supplement the text.

Alastair Barrett – Managing Director – What No Safety Services Limited commented:
“Denise O’Leary and Gavin White of Purpol Marketing were a great help in defining our marketing strategy. At What no Safety Services Ltd, we were an established business but needed a strategic refocus and used the growth voucher to set the strategic direction. Denise and Gavin had specific knowledge of our sector which meant their recommendations were easily translated into action.”

As part of the on-going development of Cistermiser Ltd, Purpol Marketing Limited were asked to undertake an audit of the existing CRM system being utilised by the company made up of office and field staff.. The primary focus of this was to gain an understanding of how effective the existing system and its configuration is at meeting both the individual user’s needs and the progressive information needs of the business.

As a means to achieve this objective Purpol Marketing undertook a number of interviews with key members of staff with the aim of understanding the following:

  • How the system has been configured
  • The customisations in place
  • Good/Bad points of the system
  • Current user pain points
  • Is the system meeting current business needs

Following the audit Purpol Marketing Limited undertook an optimisation proposal for the system to improve functionality and usability based on the information provided from the key members of personnel.

From the audit it soon become apparent that the traditional architecture of the system had been radically altered by removing the Opportunity function within the system and being replaced with a custom entity. This was done with the intention of aiding the complex mapping of customer relationships but resulted in the removal of one of the main pillars within the system. This had knock on effects through the entire system.

The outcome of the report identified that the system as it currently stood was not meeting the user’s needs. Core to the problem was the customised architecture that created a very administrative based system and through various modifications had become difficult to navigate and retrieve useable data from.

As an output of the audit Purpol Marketing developed a recommendations package tailored to the unique Cistermiser requirement.
This established the process, procedure and structure for the development of a system, which was easy to navigate and manage with one simple goal: “Create a system to provide information rather than facilitate administration”.

The package encompassed all entities within Cistermiser’s existing Sage package, with worked examples of how the system could be configured and used to their benefit while easing the burden of data management.

Furthermore it was identified how this could generate output information to further improve knowledge of Cistermiser’s client base and Opportunity source. With the recommendations in place Purpol Marketing developed an action plan to expedite the implementation stage.

David Jones – Managing Director at Cistermiser Ltd commented:
“The work undertaken by Purpol Marketing has been extremely comprehensive and provided us with a realistic appraisal of our current system followed by practical recommendations of how we can improve for the benefit of the company.”

Purpol Marketing were asked by Craig Davidge and Terry Lee of Rosemont Recruitment to offer strategic marketing advice to optimise their future company brand positioning.

As a leading construction recruitment consultancy, Rosemont were looking to develop an updated mission and vision statement and create a value proposition that was understood by clients. They were keen to explore marketing segmentation options so they could develop the company aligned to client expectation.

Following an initial scoping meeting and telephone briefings, a marketing structure review was undertaken to fully understand the current business imperatives and ensure that marketing initiatives generated were united with these.

At the meeting a number of elements were explored including:

  • Market competitor activity analysis by sector
  • Market situation analysis
  • Marketing future planning analysis using a marketing plan template
  • Business process investigation
  • Business Vision, Mission and ‘Why’ leading to Brand evolution

Prior to the workshop, Purpol Marketing undertook desk research to identify the segmentation methodology used by other recruitment companies in the sector – they were revealed to be muddled across a variety of characteristics! We were able to recommend a cohesive and clear market segmentation strategy to define the elements most valued by customers and to suggest ways that these could be emphasised in future content and messaging.

Our recommendations distilled the company mission to be ‘Providing recruitment consultancy expertise into the construction sector. Offering ideally matched candidates to clients by using tailored search methods from industry knowledgeable consultants with a dedication to never compromise on quality.’

The final stage of the process was a report documenting the audits and proposals for the future direction of marketing activity to support the business growth aspirations.

Craig Davidge, Managing Director at Rosemont Recruitment commented:
“Purpol Marketing showed their construction industry pedigree and provided a professional assessment of our business requirements. Denise made meaningful and practical suggestions that were innovative to allow future stand-out in our marketing activities.”

Terry Lee, Operations Manager at Rosemont Recruitment stated:
“We found it extremely productive and enjoyable – some great options have been presented which we can now select from, I am looking forward to putting things into action!”

Purpol Marketing were contacted by Mark Lennox of SML Contracts as they identified that they had growth ambitions but needed some strategic marketing advice in order to realise these.

Following an initial meeting, a consultation workshop was held to undertake a competitor analysis, a company SWOT analysis and a marketing audit.

With a three year plan already in pace, time was taken to understand the required future direction of SML Contracts, including current sectors of activity, expertise and project size. This enabled recommendations to be made for phased activity which could be realised over the coming year.

Aspects such as business development, maximised bid impact on pre-qualification and tender questionnaires and customer contact matrices will all form part of the future strategy.

Mark has extensive experience in senior roles within major contractors and understands the requirements of delivering on site. Purpol Marketing identified that the next stage of SML Contracts business development requires the evolution of the bid strategy in order to secure larger individual projects.

Following the workshop, the final stage of the process was a report documenting all of the audits and proposals for future direction of the company. This enabled the immediately identified items to be put into action, and to set an agenda for future business support.

We also recommended a brand redevelopment and customer segmentation proposal that will assist in driving the business forward in line with the objectives set.

Mark Lennox, Managing Director at SML Contracts commented:
“The SML team really enjoyed working with Purpol Marketing at the strategic marketing workshop. It enabled us to place priorities on our workload and focus our activity for maximum impact.”

“Denise was able to explain the science behind the business planning models in a clear manner, relevant to our business and her construction sector knowledge was invaluable in this process.”

Their skills are deployed for reactive maintenance repairs, maintenance contracts for public authorities, all aspects of refurbishment and rebuild, site management for CDM and associated building works in connection with mechanical and electrical works.

Having successfully pre-qualified for Lot 1: General Building Works £1 to less than £250,000 of Hampshire County Councils Minor Works Framework the tender arrived at a period where workloads were extremely high and was conducted concurrently with the HCC Building Fabric Maintenance tender which the company was also bidding. As such the Tew Bros team approached Purpol Marketing, who were also supporting on the building fabric maintenance tender to aid in the development of the tender.

Having already established a good understanding of the Tew Bros competencies Purpol Marketing had an advantage of knowing the company’s strengths and competences. With the tender being based around an example project the response required demonstration of construction and framework service excellence. The Purpol Team took on full responsibility for the bid management of the project and started by fully reviewing the submission requirements and establishing the structure to each question.

An initial project kick-off meeting was held with the Tew Brothers team. This was a chance to for the full team to look at the project and work out the collaborative approach, utilising the construction expertise of Tew Bros and bid expertise of Purpol. As an output Purpol commenced drafting question responses and Tew Bros developed the construction elements including method statements and programme.

Once Tew Bros had completed all the relevant information Purpol set about incorporating the knowledge into the responses and instigated a project tracking and approval process to ensure an accurate log of the response status was maintained.

A mid bid review was held to gather the team together, undertake a comprehensive review and enable the push towards the finalisation of the submission.

An extensive review was undertaken by Hampshire County Council which resulted in Tew Bros successfully securing a position on the 4-year Minor Works Framework.

Jayne Alford – Tew Bros Limited commented:
” We were delighted to work with the Purpol Marketing team again on this important framework bid. Their approach is really effective and helped present Tew Bros competences, showing our strengths and competences – which is often harder to do from inside the organisation. Through the strong set of responses, we were able to show our client the importance of this contract to our business. The messaging and output quality of work from Denise and Gavin at Purpol has enables us to achieve success.”

When the Framework was up for renewal Tew Bros knew the importance to their business and decided to bid for the contract directly. However, with an exceptional workload and lack of formal bidding experience the Tew Bros Team approached Purpol Marketing to support them in the development of the submission.

Strategic Bid Management

Working with the Tew Bros Team, Purpol Marketing took on full responsibility for the bid management of the submission. The process commenced with a complete review of the Quality submission requirement for the project encompassing a breakdown of the questions and an outline scope of the requirement. This was followed up with a day-long interview of the Tew Bros team delivering the works on behalf of the current framework members. This was the opportunity for Purpol to extract the information, ways of working and competences from the Tew Bros team and ensure this could be demonstrated and represented in the submission whilst using best practice in the bid preparation.

Purpol marketing set about developing the first draft of responses for approval and critique by the Tew Bros team and instigated a project tracking and approval process to ensure an accurate log of the response status was maintained.

A mid bid review was held to gather the team together, undertake a comprehensive review and enable the push towards the finalisation of the submission.

Following the review, an extensive review was undertaken by Hampshire County Council with the result being the successful award of the 4-year framework to Tew Bros. This was a massive achievement and a demonstration of the benefits SME organisations, providing excellent service can offer to clients. A huge congratulation to the Tew Bros Team.

Shaun Tew, Director – Tew Bros Limited commented:
” Working with the Purpol Marketing team proved to be really effective. They helped us realise our strengths and competences and then developed a strong set of responses for us to critique. We knew the importance of this contract to our business and the quality of work conducted by Purpol helped us achieve success – we are thrilled!”

With Offices throughout UK and Ireland, they provide a total package, delivering turnkey solutions for modular building and offsite construction projects, Extraspace Solutions ensure that every project is managed smoothly and comprehensively from start to finish, on time and on budget.

Hampshire County Council procures temporary and modular building requirements via its Modular Volumetric Buildings Framework, in conjunction with framework partner Surrey County Council. Other named councils have also accessed this framework to source temporary/modular and permanent buildings.

The Southern Modular Building Solutions framework was actively tendered in spring 2016 with the aim of offering an alternative to traditional build accommodation. This form of construction lends itself to temporary/demountable buildings and it is also an alternative to traditional forms of construction for permanents buildings. It is estimated that the 4-year framework will have an overall spend of £600m.

ESS recognised the importance of this framework to their business and approached Purpol Marketing to support and develop the bid submission to ensure a position on two lots:

  • Lot 3: Permanent Buildings of modular construction between £100k and £3m
  • Lot 4: Permanent Buildings of modular construction over £3m

The project had a very short timeframe and required the response to demonstrate knowledge of the construction process, governmental policy issues and latest issues including Government Soft Landing (GSL), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Whole life costing all within a tight page count. Overall the submission required the demonstration of competence within five areas around the scenario and core issues:

  • Design Management and Development
  • Project Management
  • Handover and Aftercare
  • Financial Control
  • Framework delivery

Purpol set about drafting the submission responses drawing upon our expertise of the market place, industry issues and framework issues ensuring a consistent message was generated through each lot submission. This was then reviewed with the ESS to draw upon their expert knowledge of the build process for the scenario within each Lot. This ensured best practice, key framework drivers such as BIM and GSL were consistently demonstrated throughout.

Notification has been received that ESS have indeed successfully won places on both Lots 3 and 4, in line with their target. Purpol Marketing are delighted that their expertise has resulted in such an important win for their valued client.

Paul Tierney – Managing Director Extraspace Solutions Limited commented:
“We are over the moon with what Purpol Marketing delivered, they impressed us with their construction knowledge as well as their flexibility to work to our changing requirements. This framework win was a key target for us, securing a place on both lots we wanted is a testament to Purpol’s efforts alongside our team”

This included ensuring consistent messaging across the submission, how to optimise the team’s CV’s, presenting the logic behind the delivery programme, selling the companies skills through their historic case studies, BIM best practice, GSL capabilities and how to present the document to make it easy for the assessor to award points.

“The support provided by Purpol proved to be really insightful. Purpol Marketing were approached by WBG to support them in their bid for Lot 7, West Area for projects valued between £1 Million and £3.5 Million and generate a newly branded and professional scripted tender response. In order to undertake the project Purpol Marketing undertook an initial review assessment of the tender requirement with the WBG team to ensure all the requirements of the submission could be fulfilled within a tight timescale. This encompassed four sections:

  • Volume 4a – Supplier Qualification Information Database (SQUID)

  • Volume 4c – Project Quality Assessment
  • Volume 4d – Project Specific Cost

This first gateway was successfully passed and the working relationship was established to deliver the project together with Purpol Marketing establishing a delivery programme and sign off procedure for the delivery in line with the timeline.

With a vast amount of information required for the delivery of the tender Purpol Marketing set about scripting the responses for the submission. Early in the process WBG recognised the quality of information being produced and asked if Purpol Marketing could support in the undertaking the following additional lots:

Purpol Marketing took up the challenge and delivered a cohesively branded and messaged submission of 478 unique pages, covering all aspects of the various quality elements of the tender utilising our unique knowledge of marketing and critical issues within the construction industry. We were notified in Jan 2016 that W B Griffiths had won a place on all 5 lots they applied for – a phenomenal result for Purpol Marketing!

Bid management is a specialist field, as it demands understanding and conformance with strict procurement requirements. To successfully get through the procurement process, the bidding organisation needs to generate a compelling response backed up with relevant evidence.

Purpol Marketing were approached by Extraspace Solutions to support them by assessing a historic bid in order to offer feedback to improve their future score. They were already successful, but were looking to elevate their pitch to the next level. Following a detailed assessment of the content provided and the scoring criteria, Purpol provided a 54-page report that assessed each element of every question and identified key themes, reviewed the answers in line with the scoring matrix and offered content optimisation suggestions.

Having experienced the detail that Purpol were able to provide, Extraspace then commissioned Purpol to act as bid writers as an extension of their bid writing team. Following assessment of the bid criteria, the optimal structure of the bid presentation was developed to match the stated requirement. Following the finalisation of the content, Purpol Marketing delivered a report file back to the team so they can use the information for optimising future bid responses.

Rob Goddard, Managing Director at King Builders commented:
‘We were delighted to have the external construction industry insight that Gavin and Denise from Purpol Marketing were able to bring to our bid documentation. We have known each other for a long time and I have seen the expertise in PQQ and Tender quality information they have delivered for other organisations so I was confident they could make sound recommendations for our bid content. The marketing perspective that Purpol was able to bring with their tailored assessment means we were able to build the suggestions in to our PQQ bid response, allowing us to maximise our submission.’

Purpol Marketing were delighted to work with CMS Group again to provide targeted marketing consultancy in order to generate a bespoke strategic bid activity plan for the CMS Group.
The project included initial scoping meetings, a marketing audit to assess the current collateral, and the generation of the company content marketing strategy specifically aimed at the optimisation of identified business development targets.

Following on from the report and following the PAS91 template structure, detailed company specific text was generated on all relevant business areas so that the collateral was aligned to the market objectives detailed within PQQ documents.

The final bid library was presented in the PAS91 structure for ease of use and access.

“We were delighted to have the external construction industry insight that Denise from Purpol Marketing was able to bring to our bid documentation. As construction people we are traditionally great at delivering the service, but have historically been reserved about documenting our skills.”

We are able to take this learning for our other bids and will update our bid library with the new graphics and content so we can gain maximum use from it in the future.”
